A Person Who Draws Is Called

Is there a better word for drawer?

And I mean drawer as in someone who draws. Not the furniture lol. Drawer just sounds so wrong to me.

Edit: I'm going with draftsman (I see you NickyNeptune!). It's not perfect but nothing ever is. Thank you for your time!

That has more of a commercial connotation. I mean like someone who just draws for their own sake, not for a book, ad, etc.

Does it have to be a single word? There's nothing wrong with the word "artist" as modified by the medium the artist uses. Pencil artist, graphite artist, charcoal artist, colored pencil artist, watercolor artist.. By modifying the word with a medium you have a very clear picture of what such an artist's work might look like, whereas generic words like "illustrator" could refer to anything from digitally produced vectors to oil paintings.

level 2

They just don't sound right. It's too limiting and too specialized.

Illustrator is fine, even if you specialize in certain media, because it's a job. An illustrator creates illustrations; pictures that tell a story. It's all about what you're trying to convey, regardless of medium.

And I'm sorry to you and everyone else if I'm coming off difficult. It's just that I've been drawing all my life and I want a title that fits that more concisely than artist.

level 1

How about a draftsman? I know they refer to people who draw well that way.

level 2

That's probably the closest to what I'm looking for. My understanding is that the people who are referred as draftsmen usually do technical drawings for like building layouts or whatever. Would it still apply to a visual artist?

This is my guess too.

An artist may sketch for fun.

Problem might be more that there are too many answers to this question. Sketcher, cartoonist, caricaturist, impressionist, realist, illustrator, etc. These are all specialized terms that can be used for someone who draws. If you don't want to get so specific then your best bet is probably artist.

level 2

Sketches are more quick drawings or practice or rough ideas. I'm looking more for something to describe an artist who specializes in drawing and would spend hours resulting in a complete, finished drawing.

Illustrator or graphic artist.

level 2

Not everyone who draws is an illustrator or illustrates. Graphic art is too broad. Thank you though.

Here's one for you: renderer.

(One of my art teachers said it to me long ago.)

Illustration is related to drawing, but it's its own thing as well. I've taken drawing classes and I've taken illustration classes. There's some drawing lessons involved in illustration for sure, but mostly it's about ideas and conveying a message or story to people. Drawing classes are predominately strictly about drawing itself. There is no shared visual language or symbolism involved, really. Just drawing.

I appreciate the link lol. Definitely not a tracer.
